ICU nurses work quickly, efficiently, independently, andmeticulously. In order to treat the most critical patients in the mostthorough manner, critical care nurses use their specialized skills andextensive knowledge of disease pathology to provide interventions that sustainlife.


About this unit:
  • 15-bed high acuity Surgical ICU

Responsibilities:
  • Throughassessment of the patients physical, nutritional, psychosocial, spiritual,emotional, cultural, educational, and rehabilitative needs, problems areidentified and documented in the clinical record and communicated to thephysician, case manager, and ancillary departments when appropriate
  • Appropriatestandards of care, care plans, and interventions are initiated, professionallymodified, and communicated to the patient and other members of the healthcareteam
  • Ableto demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based onphysical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriateto the following age groups: pediatric, children, adolescent, adult,geriatric
  • Providespatient/family health education that promotes healthy behaviors, supportsrecovery, and enables the patient/family to be involved in decisions abouttheir own care
  • Thepatients responses to interventions and progress toward desired outcomes areassessed, re-assessed, evaluated, and documented in the clinical record
  • Patientcare activities are coordinated through collaboration and planning with othermembers of the healthcare team
  • Physiciansorders are carried out accurately and efficiently, and clarified when necessary
  • Adverseor sudden changes in the patients conditions are promptly communicated to thephysician, charge nurse, nursing supervisor, and/or family with specific andpertinent data
  • Ableto identify potential or actual victims of abuse and understands the properreporting mechanism
  • Ableto recognize adverse drug reactions and demonstrates understanding of properreporting mechanism once reaction is identified
  • Appropriatelyassesses the patients pain and involves the patient in effective management ofthat pain using appropriate interventions
  • Ableto demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for administration of bloodand blood products and appropriately monitors the patient receiving blood/bloodproducts for any transfusion reaction; takes proper measures once a reaction isrecognized
  • Patientcare equipment is utilized safely and efficiently in accordance with hospitalpolicies and procedures
  • Standardprecautions are promoted and followed in the utilization of principles ofinfection control in patient care
  • Achievesstated goals related to job performance
  • Educationalattendance records reveal attendance at all required educational programs/in-services

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Nursing Program from an accredited school
  • Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Stateof Louisiana
  • CPR for Healthcare Providers to be completed within 30 days ofhire
  • ACLS to be completed within 30 days of hire
