Madison and southwestern Wisconsin is a wonderful place to live, with plenty of lakes, wonderful outdoor recreation and friendly people.About the AmeriCorps VISTA Program: Since 1965, over 220,000 AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program have joined the fight against poverty by helping local organizations expand their capacity to make change. The VISTA program serves in each of the 50 U.S. States and in all U.S. territories. Through Capacity building activities such as fundraising, grant writing, research, and volunteer recruitment, AmeriCorps Members in the VISTA program are able to gain experience and leadership skills. This opportunity prepares members for a life of service in the public, private, or nonprofit sector. Members serving in the AmeriCorps VISTA program serve full time for one-year terms. They build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities. Members in the AmeriCorps VISTA program are eligible for a modest living allowance of $15,002 over the year of service to cover basic expenses, health insurance, professional development training, and an end of service education award, or an $1,800 cash stipend. For more information on the AmeriCorps VISTA program, please visit: Program Overview: Our Mobile Pantry program supplements the work of food pantries, shelters, and meal sites that are operating in fixed locations. The program allows us to expand food access in underserved communities and areas where few to no resources exist due to a lack of brick and mortar pantries or a lack of physical capacity at those agencies to store and distribute. Working with a community partner the program allows us to reach participants at a designated neighborhood site, at a prescheduled time (on a recurring basis) for immediate distribution or where we may need to bring short-term temporary mobile assistance to a site due to an emergency. Second Harvest Foodbank provides the food at no cost, places the order for each mobile, and Second Harvest Foodbank trucks deliver both highly perishable and dry food assortment that was ordered from the SHFB warehouse to the mobile site on the day of distribution. The volunteers of the mobile site then follow their sites distribution plan to work to distribute the food to participants.Position Summary/Job Duties: The Rural Nutrition Programs VISTA member will work primarily with our Mobile Food Pantry program to build capacity at mobile pantry sites, thereby assisting to provide volunteer leadership and stability. This VISTA Member will work in collaboration with staff and community partners to ensure that our mobile pantry sites have the volunteers to meet the needs of our rural communities and build the community engagement necessary for long-term sustainability of rural hunger relief initiatives. This will involve community assessment, development of recruitment materials and best practices, as well as supporting mobile pantries' ability to track their impact.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Ideal candidates will have experience with relationship building, strong communication skills, effective time management and organization skills. They should have the ability to work collaboratively with community members to identify problems as well as solutions.
